Started with some succulents and a glass container from Ikea.
Added some cheap fish tank gravel from Wal-Mart. Just a thin layer in the bottom so the soil can drain. This layer looks a little higher from the sides of the glass because I pushed it toward the outsides of the container just so more of it would be visible when it was all done.
Then I added just a thin layer of the soil from the container the plants originally came in and then a thing layer of this cactus mix soil on top of that.
After that I started adding the plants. The first one easy enough, but the second one was very prickly and I didn't have any gloves that would protects my fingers. So I grabbed one of the red plastic cups I was using to scoop the soil from the bag. It was just the right size to slip over the little cactus and hold it upright while I packed some soil in around it.
Once I got all the plants in and a little soil packed around them to hold them up, I need to fill up the container so the soil would be packed nice and snug around the plants.
Once the container was filled, it looked like this:
I added another good scoop of gravel just to be decorative and gave it a nice watering.
Then I took my finished project inside feeling quite proud of myself.
But I was a little worried my psycho cat would try to dig them up again, so my fiancé being the genius he is, suggested we use another of the Ikea containers as a cover over the top. I love it!
Now, hopefully, it will be quite safe and happy. Hopefully it gets enough sunlight and hopefully i don't over- or under-water it. I have killed more than one cactus in the past, and these plants looked like they needed a little tlc from the start. But if I care for them well enough, I should get some more of those nice bright little flowers! Yay! Ok, til next time… :)
